Air Purification & Indoor air Quality

sources for indoor air pollution

Indoor Air Quality is important

Ever wonder what triggers your allergies? aggravates your asthma? or just makes you feel sick more often? the air in our homes picks up and carries pollution throughout the house. controlling that pollution will make the air in our homes a lot more pleasant and healthy.

poor indoor air quality will aggravate other symptoms. installing a uv light can help.

Tackle The Stale Air

If we could see everything that is in our air, we would be blown away. A simple cough can be irritated by smoke, pet dander, and growth inside the air conditioning system. Adding ventilation to help remove the bad stuff that’s in the air will improve personal health. While adding an Air Purification System with better filtration can help keep growth from forming inside you air conditioning system.

Don’t Let Poor Indoor Air Ruin Your Day.

Studies have proven that the quality of air inside homes is often worse than the quality of outside air. Indoor air has many sources of pollution that can cause health issues, unpleasant odor, and your home can develop sick building syndrome. Sick building syndrome is a phrase used to describe the symptoms and discomfort people experience while spending time inside a building; symptoms that are not specifically related to an illness, but rather to the environment inside a building. Exposure to poor indoor air quality may not always result in a fast, onset of symptoms; instead, there may be slow, subtle effects like:

  • Mental fatigue, headaches, and sleepiness
  • Dizziness,
  • Redness or skin irritation
  • Dry mucous or skin
  • Irritation of eyes, nose and throat
  • Cough and wheezing

People that develop these symptoms are at times, not taken seriously. Since these symptoms seem to appear and disappear, they are often brushed off as over exaggerations. Additionally, these symptoms may become amplified by exterior factors such as:

  • Thermal environment (clothing, air speed and temperature, humidity, etc.)
  • Smoke
  • Odors
  • Irritants – such as dust
  • Stress Problems (perceptible or nonprecipitable)
  • Allergens – such as pollen
  • Biological contamination

Causes of Poor Indoor Air Quality

There are many contributing factors that lead to poor indoor air quality. Such factors that contribute to poor IAQ (indoor air quality) include:

  • Inadequate ventilation – 50% of all IAQ problems are due to lack of ventilation
  • Poor intake/exhaust locations
  • Inadequate air filtration or dirty filters
  • Contaminants that are given off when something is burnt. (This includes gas stoves, fireplaces, and candles.)
  • High levels of humidity generated in the home by everyday activities (bathing, cooking, dishwashing, etc.)
  • Organisms (dust mites, bacteria, and viruses) living off the moisture, dander and human skin flakes that are not caught by the air filter
  • Poor air distribution
  • Using and keeping harsh cleaning material inside the home
  • Storing pesticides or herbicides in the home.
  • Vacuuming. not using a vacuum with a filter that’s able to trap all the pollution/dust pulled from the carpets
  • Inadequate maintenance

Use HEPA filter

Dirty Air Filters

Air filters are the first line of defense for IAQ. Filters catch all the dust and debris that is in your air. Bacteria will use this as their primary source of food. If you are not replacing the filter regularly, you are allowing bacteria to grow inside your air conditioning system. Try using a higher MERV rated filter. MERV 11 is a good place to start. The best practice is to install a Media Filter with a higher MERV rating.

Solutions For Poor Indoor Air Quality

Homes are essentially boxes of air, complex boxes of air. What they are made of, what we bring into them, how we condition them, and how we use them all contribute to the contents of the air inside them. The point of IAQ is to improve the quality of the air in the home. a few ways of improving the indoor air quality in the home are:

  • Controlling the temperature and humidity. Keep humidity between 30% and 50%. (This will keep down dust mite and other micro-organism growth)
  • Ventilation- consider whole home ventilation or spot ventilation ( ventilate near the source of the pollution: bathrooms, kitchens, garages, hobby areas, etc.)
  • Identify and Remove the source of pollution – don’t bring items that put off VOC or air pollution into the home.
  • Filtration – change your heating and air conditioning system’s filter regularly and use a filter with a minimum MERV 11 rating. Install a media filter or air cleaner on the heating and cooling system.

It is clear that indoor pollutants have an impact on people’s health. Installing air filtration systems, adding ventalation and dehumidification equipment and  removing the source of the pollution are the most effective options. While diluting the concentration of the pollution is the next best step in reducing the potential impact. Dilution can be accomplished by installing various air purification system. the most common air purification equipment is the UV light or UV air purification system. while these UV systems require more frequent maintenance and have a limited effective reach, they provide a way to tackle the challenges of IAQ at a more cost effective approach .

MERV 16 Media Filter for better IAQ

Media Filter

Installing a media filter in your heating and air conditioning system will provide the best air filtration. Media filters are installed directly on the furnace or air handler. A media filters usually last 6-12 months. Filters are usually replaced during your scheduled maintenance.
