What Is Ventilation?

Ventilation, is the mechanical replacement of bad air with good air. When we talk about ventilation relating to a home, we refer to the exchange of indoor with outdoor air.
Ventilation is actually a combination of processes which result in the supply and removal of air from inside a home. This process typically includes bringing in outdoor air, filtering that air and conditioning it before it is distributed though out the home, mainly into living areas, where people spend most of their time. At the same time, air from inside the home is being pulled outside. Certain locations in the home produce air that is not ideal for a healthy indoor environment. The quality of indoor air may deteriorate when one or more of these processes are inadequate. Without proper ventilation, a home will seal in harmful pollutants, (such as carbon monoxide, odors, VOCs and moisture) that can damage a home, cause issues with indoor air quality and problems with the heating and air conditioning system.

Why is Ventilation Important?

Poorly ventilated homes will allow combustion gasses from fuel burning appliances, pollutants from cleaning products/pesticides, and off gases from products we buy, to accumulate inside the home, causing a potential risk to people and pets inside the home. Excessive moisture from improperly ventilated bathrooms, or other high humidity areas in the home can also threaten your health, and can lead to organic growth, ruin insulation, and even cause structural damage. Additionally, elevated levels of humidity can make cooling equipment work harder, leading to more costly energy bills. Homes without proper ventilation will also have a harder time with unpleasant smells. Pet dander, laundry rooms and stale air will allow undesirable smells to be locked in the home. Ventilating a home takes into account the physical layout of the home and areas that produce unhealthy air. Once these areas are identified, proper steps can be taken to introduced controlled air into the home. Ventilation is a critical factor in a home. It is as important as the color of the walls or the back splash in the kitchen.

Spaces that need ventilation

Fresh Air

Remember when mom would say: “Go out side and get some fresh air!” houses are no different they need fresh air. Houses are complex boxes of air. without proper ventilation the air inside will quickly become stale and unhealthy.

Proper Ventilation

Now that we know why it is a good idea to ventilate our home, we need to understand that the air being vented out needs to be replaced with new clean air. Without replacing that air, the heating and air conditioning system will draw in air that is just as bad from the outside. Brining back in all the moisture, VOCs, and off gasses that where discarded. We need proper air exchange. The best way to do this is to introduce controlled ventilation with equipment that works with your heating and air conditioning system. Proper ventilation and air exchange is provided by a system that:

  • Removes unhealthy/unwanted air from inside your home.
  • Exchanges the old stale air for fresh outdoor air..
  • Cleans and Filters incoming air..
  • Heats or cools the incoming air so it does not become a load on the heating and air conditioning system..
  • Removes humidity from the incoming air. .
  • Releases the clean, temperature-controlled air back into your living space..

Types of Ventilation

While there are many types of ventilation equipment, in our local area the best type of ventilating equipment is:

  • Energy recovery ventilator (ERV): An ERV transfers moisture and heat during the air exchange process so that your HVAC equipment doesn’t have to work as hard. As a result, you save energy while enjoying the benefits of fresh air.
  • Whole-Home Dehumidifier with ventilation – this unit brings in fresh air, filters it, and dehumidifies it before releasing it back into your home.

An ERV might be the best option if you don’t have a problem keeping the indoor humidity below 60% relative humidity. ERVs exhaust and supply air into the home.

A Whole- house dehumidifier is great if you need to maintain indoor humidity down and allow controlled fresh air in. a whole-home dehumidifier with ventilation does not exhaust air out of the home, so you need to have an exhaust system already in place to vent the stale air out.

use an ERV to properly ventilate a house.

E.R.V.

Energy Recovery Ventilators will allow fresh air in while exhausting the unwanted stale air out. ERVs are the best type of ventilation system for our part of the country. ERVs bring in air without the humidity or heat that would make the air conditioning system work overtime.

Whole home ventilating dehumidifiers

Dehumidifier

A dehumidifier is great from homes that have issues maintaining a comfortable humidity level. Spray foam or encapsulated homes are ideal for a ventilating dehumidifier.
